The Los Angeles Police Department announced on the start of the week that the 32-year-old son, in his early thirties, had been detained and was being held without the possibility of bail.

The victims' young adult daughter, Romy, discovered her mother and father in their home with multiple knife-inflicted injuries on Sunday, according to information provided to media sources.

History of the Son and Family

The son has spoken publicly about his battles with substance abuse and homelessness. His personal journey formed the basis for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he made with his dad in 2015.

Their residence is in Brentwood, a wealthy celebrity enclave known for estates, boutique shops and dining spots. On the following day, a private guard was posted outside the home as news crews assembled outside the front gate.

The Director's Illustrious Career

The filmmaker, the son of comedy great Carl Reiner, began his career in the 1960s and rose to fame playing the character Mike 'Meathead' Stivic in the classic television series 'All in the Family'.

He solidified his reputation with the cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, which he directed and starred in.

The director was married to sitcom actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and is the legal parent to Marshall's daughter, actress Tracy.

He wed Michele in the late 80s, who he said he met during the production of the beloved romantic film When Harry Met Sally. The pair had three children together.

Michele Reiner's Career and Public Reaction

Mrs. Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photo business and film production firm.

He was also recognized for his outspoken political activism and backing of Democratic candidates.

In a social media statement referring to their deaths "tragic", former President Donald Trump criticised the director, implying that they "allegedly" died "because of the anger he caused others through his significant, relentless, and incurable affliction" with "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

"It was said to have driven people CRAZY by his intense focus of President Donald J. Trump," the message stated.

The specifics are unclear what reports the statement was citing, and while the case is being considered a murder, police have not spoken on any potential reason.

A number of political figures criticised Trump over the remarks, including former ally a congresswoman, who stated the deaths were a "family tragedy, not about partisan issues or political enemies".

"Countless households face challenges with a loved one with substance issues and mental health issues. It's extremely hard and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder," she said.

The Entertainment Industry Response and Tributes

Trump's post were also met with anger by a number of the family's friends.

In a post on a platform, a journalist and friend, the ex-wife of California and longtime friend of the couple, said the two were "caring mothers and fathers".

"Their love for all their kids and they never gave up looking after them," she wrote.

Music icon Elton John, who had a cameo in this recent Spinal Tap sequel, commented: "It's hard to believe at today's news of Rob and Michele.

"They represented two of the most beautiful individuals I'd ever met and they should not have met this fate."

Another performer John Cusack, who starred in Reiner's 1980s film 'The Sure Thing', referred to him as "an exceptional person", while actor Elijah Wood, who appeared in the 1994 movie 'North', said he was "horrified" by the couple's deaths.
