French authorities will start stopping small boats in English Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Now French officials will again be allowed to stop boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
